ITL Vacuum is a precision engineering firm based in Hastings. The company specialises in the design, manufacture, and supply of high-quality vacuum engineering products to clients worldwide.

They’ve been specialising in the manufacture of special electro-optical tubes for university and science research applications since the 1960s, experiencing rapid expansion, growing their range and manufacturing capability.

Today, ITL Vacuum serves the world’s leading vacuum suppliers and is an award-winning business.

High output, precision CNC machining centres are the powerhouse behind ITL’s success as an OEM supplier to the world leaders in vacuum.

ITL Vacuum engaged the Randoll team to work on replacing their overhead busbars.

The Challenges

ITL’s factory houses several CNC machining centres. ITL uses an overhead busbar system to distribute electricity with greater ease and more flexibility than some other forms of installation and distribution. Busbars use less space than cable systems – a big advantage when dealing with thousands of amps – and the tightly compressed conductors inside the busbar are isolated and reliable.

The disruptions ITL Vacuum was experiencing with their overhead busbars was causing disruption to their manufacturing process.

Their incumbent electrician was unable to resolve the issue and so ITL Vacuum were on the lookout for a specialist electrical engineering team to replace the overhead busbars to ensure the smooth running of their manufacturing process.

The Solution

The Randoll team specified, sourced, assembled and installed a complete new 400A 3 phase overhead busbar system for ITL Vacuum.

Our carefully crafted project plan included:

  1. Site visit and assessment to assess the existing overhead busbars in detail and determine the scope of work required.
  2. Design and planning: Our detailed assessment enabled our experienced engineers to design and plan replacement of the overhead busbars.
  3. Out-of-hours work: to ensure minimal downtime, we committed to carry out the replacement work over several weekends.
  4. Testing and commissioning: Once the work was complete, the new overhead busbars were tested and commissioned to ensure they were functioning correctly and safely.

Working weekends out of production hours enabled us to ensure minimal disruption to ITL Vacuum’s production process.
